Fire Safety Week 2007 - Check
your smoke alarm
This year Fire Safety Week runs from 14
– 21 November. Supported by the Fire Protection Association,
its activities are arranged and run by fire brigades up and down
the country.
The theme for 2007 is Check your smoke alarm. This can be adapted
to convey the message you want, for instance, Check your smoke alarm
- Check your battery! or Check your smoke alarm - Is it positioned
correctly? or Check your smoke alarm - Press the test button every
week!
First held in 1975, and run every year since then, Fire Safety
Week gives brigades, and other interested organisations, an opportunity
to collaborate in addressing the fire safety problems which particularly
affect their communities
Local brigades plan a programme of events, usually organised to
tackle a different theme of their choosing on each day of the week.
There may be days devoted to, for example, fire safety in the kitchen,
your escape plan in the event of a fire, or the correct positioning
of smoke alarms in the home.

Introduction
Fire Safety Week is initiated by the Fire Protection Association in
partnership with the UK fire services and is supported by the Association
of British Insurers and Lloyd’s. It is an annual national event in
which many activities are concentrated in one week to promote an increased
awareness of the need for fire safety in the workplace, at home and
at leisure.
The Fire Protection Association is the UK’s national fire safety
organisations. It works to identify and draw attention to the dangers
of fire and the means by which their potential for loss is kept
to a minimum. The FPA is supported by the Association of British
Insurers and Lloyd’s.
During Fire Safety Week, the Fire Protection Association (FPA)
highlights the true cost of fires in the UK. Fire costs homes and
families, jobs, property, environment and mllions of pounds worth
of property damage every year. There are however, steps which can
be taken to reduce substantially the risk of a fire happening in
the first place. The FPA produces a range of promotional literature
including checklists and bookmarkers that consider methods on how
to minimise fires in home and look at the major causes of fires
at work.
Copies of all Fire Safety Week literature is available free from
the FPA and from most County Fire Brigade Fire Safety Departments
throughout the country. These Fire Safety Departments will be able
to provide details of local activities being planned.
