Arson Risk Assessment for Schools Program

Introduction

Schools and colleges are top of the fire insurance list when you consider premises that are involved in major fires. Schools and Colleges appear to do very little to reverse this trend and will remain at the top of the list. There have been many projects to encourage schools to take fire safety more seriously but it appears to fall on deaf ears. Another project to help schools reduce these heavy property fire losses is a computer program " Arson Fire Risk Assessment for Schools". The application was written in Visual Basic 5 and it is not very sophisticated but I believe it may help.

The Arson Fire Risk Assessment for Schools program is a personal computer program that takes a group of probability factors and uses them to make certain predictions. The probability factors are gathered using a questionnaire located in the help file and can be printed out for use. The resultant probability factors are inputted into the programme and results are shown in the form of predictions regarding the possibility of arson or fires involving the school. These predictions are not necessary useful in themselves but they give you a bench mark to work with when you decide to improve the fire precautions in the school. For example you may have to decide one of two possible improvements to enhance security, for example improve the security of the doors or provide limited palisade fencing. You can run each scenario through the programme, depending on the results, you are able to make an informed decision which is the most effective option and which one gives the best value for money. Obviously there are many other factors when making these kinds of decisions but this is certainly one of them.

The program is a fire risk assessment for the protection of the buildings and does not consider the safety of staff and pupils. Consequently it does not help you conduct a fire risk assessment to meet the requirements of the The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
