British Standard 476 Fire Tests

When designing a building a very important consideration is how it will behave in fire and ensure the elements of structure will not collapse but remain standing or hold back the fire for a prescribed time. The building regulations stipulates the rules and the degree of fire resistance of the elements of structure. However the British standard 476 dictates the appropriate fire tests for these elements of structure/materials and grades the level of fire resistance. The following is a list of the current standards.

  • BS 476-3:2004. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Classification and method of test for external fire exposure to roofs
  • BS 476-4:1970. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Non-combustibility test for materials
  • BS 476-6:1989+A1:2009. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test for fire propagation for products
  • BS 476-7:1997. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test to determine the classification of the surface spread of flame of products
  • BS 476-10:2009. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Guide to the principles, selection, role and application of fire testing and their outputs
  • BS 476-11:1982. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method for assessing the heat emission from building materials
  • BS 476-12:1991. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test for ignitability of products by direct flame impingement
  • BS 476-13:1987, ISO 5657:1997. Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of measuring the ignitability of products subjected to thermal irradiance
